Smart Travel in Seoul: A Complete Guide to Subway Lockers (Locations & Fees)

Have you ever felt weighed down by heavy suitcases or shopping bags while exploring Seoul? One of the best features of the Seoul Metro is the 'T-Locker' (storage lockers) system available at almost every station. For international travelers who want to lighten their load and explore the city's alleys more freely, here is a detailed guide on how to use them and what to expect in terms of fees.

1. Where Can I Leave My Luggage? (Locker Locations)

Lockers are available in most stations from Line 1 to Line 9. However, in large stations, finding them can be tricky. Here are some tips:

  • Primary Locations: Usually found near the Ticket Gates (Turnstiles), in corridors leading to the restrooms, or right next to the Exits.

  • Using the App (T-Locker): If you download the 'T-Locker' app, you can check the nearest locker location from your current spot and see the number of available lockers in real-time. This is a pro-tip for mastering Seoul travel.

  • Station Maps: Look for the 'Key Icon' on the comprehensive station maps installed near exits to find the exact location of the lockers.

2. Fees and Usage Time

Seoul subway lockers vary in price depending on size and operate on a system where additional fees are charged after a certain period.

Basic Fee (For the first 4 hours)

  • Small: 2,000 KRW (Backpacks, handbags, shopping bags)

  • Medium: 3,000 KRW (Carry-on suitcases, large bags)

  • Large: 4,000 KRW (Large suitcases, golf bags, etc.)

Additional Fees

  • After the initial 4 hours, an additional fee is charged every hour.

    • Small: 500 KRW / Medium: 800 KRW / Large: 1,000 KRW (per hour)

  • After 12 hours: Once 12 hours have passed, fees may repeat in 12-hour cycles, so be careful if you plan to store items long-term.

3. How to Use & Payment Methods

Most modern lockers are automated and offer services in English, Chinese, and Japanese, as well as Korean.

  1. Storing (Store):

    • Press the 'Store' button on the screen and select an available locker number.

    • Proceed with fingerprint registration or set a password. (Fingerprint is generally more secure.)

    • Once payment is complete, the door will open. Place your items inside and close the door firmly.

  2. Payment Methods:

    • Credit/Debit Cards (International cards like Visa and Mastercard are accepted)

    • T-money Card

    • Mobile Payments (Samsung Pay, etc.)

    • Note: Many machines do not accept cash, so having a card is essential.

  3. Retrieving (Take Out):

    • Press the 'Take Out' button, enter your locker number, and verify your identity (fingerprint or password).

    • If additional fees have incurred, the door will open after payment.

4. Survival Tips for International Travelers

  • Same-Day Pickup Rule: Access to the lockers may be restricted after the subway closes (usually around midnight). If you plan to travel late, check the last train time for that station.

  • Long-Term Storage Warning: Items stored for more than 3 days (72 hours) may be moved to a separate warehouse. Retrieving them will involve much higher storage fees and relocation costs.

  • Keep Your Receipt: If you encounter an issue and need to call customer service, having the serial number on your receipt makes the process much faster. (An English customer service number is usually printed at the bottom.)

  • Busy Stations: Lockers at popular spots like Hongik Univ., Myeong-dong, and Seoul Station fill up very quickly. If they are full, consider private storage services like HIMADA or Raon located outside the stations.

5. Tips for Major Stations

  • Seoul Station: This is where KTX and subways meet, so it has the most lockers but they sell out the fastest. If the main areas are full, try checking deeper toward the Airport Railroad section.

  • Hongik Univ. Station: High demand for medium/large lockers due to shoppers. Using the 'T-Locker' app to check availability is a must here.

  • Gangnam Station: There are so many exits here. It is highly recommended to take a photo of the nearby exit number after storing your luggage so you can find it later!

Once your bags are safely stored, you are ready to enjoy the sights and tastes of Seoul with your hands free! We hope you have a fantastic, light-footed journey exploring everything the city has to offer.
