A Stroll Through Seoul’s Past and Present: The Perfect Half-Day Guide from Anguk Station
One of the best places in Seoul to experience both traditional charm and modern "hip" vibes is Anguk Station (Line 3).
Anguk Station serves as the perfect starting point for a half-day trip, as it is within walking distance of Gyeongbukgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Bukchon Hanok Village, and Ikseon-dong. For travelers who want to experience the essence of Korean beauty in a short amount of time, here is the "Perfect Half-Day Course Starting from Anguk Station."
Hello! Today, I’m introducing a walking course centered around Anguk Station (Line 3) in the heart of Seoul, perfect for a 4 to 5-hour excursion. I’ve designed this route to be easy on the feet, focusing on pleasant walking paths rather than steep hills. Let’s get started!
1. Course Overview (Timeline)
Total Duration: Approx. 4 hours 30 minutes
Starting Point: Anguk Station (Line 3), Exit 2 or 3
Transportation: 100% Walking (Comfortable sneakers are a must!)
2. Detailed Itinerary (Route)
① 10:00 AM – Gyedong-gil & The Start of Bukchon (Exit 3)
Exit through Anguk Station Exit 3 and walk straight toward the Hyundai Building. The street following it, Gyedong-gil, is much quieter and more local than other parts of Bukchon. Take your time exploring the small photo studios, artisan workshops, and unique brand showrooms—like the one converted from an old public bathhouse.
② 10:40 AM – Bukchon Hanok Village & Gahoe-dong Alleys (15-min walk)
Heading west from Gyedong-gil leads you to the highlight of Bukchon: the Gahoe-dong Alleys. This is one of Seoul’s most beautiful photo spots, where the layered tiled roofs of traditional houses (Hanoks) contrast beautifully with the modern skyscrapers in the distance.
Etiquette: This is a residential area where people actually live. Please keep your voice low and maintain a quiet demeanor.
③ 12:00 PM – Lunch: Local Gems Near Anguk
The area around Anguk offers everything from traditional Korean cuisine to trendy brunch spots.
Recommendation 1 (Traditional): Warm up with Kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) or Sujebi (hand-pulled dough soup). The area is famous for "Nopo" (long-standing traditional restaurants).
Recommendation 2 (Trendy): Anguk is known as the "Mecca of Bagels." Try one of the famous bagel shops or hidden brunch cafes in the alleys.
④ 01:20 PM – Songhyeon Green Plaza & Gamgodang-gil (10-min walk)
After lunch, take a stroll through Songhyeon Green Plaza, a vast green space recently opened to the public. You can enjoy an unobstructed view of the Inwangsan and Bukhansan mountain ridges. Connected to the plaza is Gamgodang-gil, a stone-wall path lined with charming accessory shops and galleries.
⑤ 02:00 PM – Wrap up at Ikseon-dong Hanok Alley (10-min walk)
Walk back toward Anguk Station Exit 4 and head toward the Nagwon Instrument Arcade. You will soon find the narrow, winding alleys of Ikseon-dong. End your trip by relaxing at a cafe or bar housed in a 100-year-old Hanok, enjoying Korean desserts or a cup of coffee.
💡 Pro-Tips for Your Anguk Adventure
Storage Lockers: There are plenty of storage lockers inside Anguk Station. Drop off your heavy bags first to enjoy your walk light-handed.
Tourist Information: There is an information center near Exit 5. You can pick up free paper maps here if you prefer them over digital ones.
Restrooms: Public restrooms are scarce inside the residential alleys of Bukchon. It’s best to use the facilities at Anguk Station or at the entrance of Songhyeon Green Plaza.
Hanbok Experience: For truly special photos, rent a Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) near Anguk Station. Plus, you’ll get free admission to Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palaces!
